2 arrested in Monday bust appear in court

MARSHALL – Two rural Marshall residents arrested in connection with a drug bust earlier this week made their first court appearances on Tuesday.

Justin Lee Hanson, 25, and Taylor Ann Simpson, 24, were each charged in Lyon County District Court with multiple counts of controlled substance crime. Hanson was also charged with ineligible possession of a firearm. Hearing dates for both Hanson and Simpson were set for later this month.

Law enforcement seized 35 pounds of marijuana from a residence about 7 miles southeast of Marshall on Monday, after an investigation by the Brown, Lyon, Redwood Renville Drug Task Force, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department said. The drugs had a street value of about $220,000. A weapon was also seized, the Sheriff’s Department said.

On Tuesday, Hanson was charged with two counts of third degree controlled substance crime – liability for crimes of another, fifth degree controlled substance crime – liability for crimes of another and ineligible possession of a firearm. A complaint alleges that on Feb. 9, Hanson or an accomplice possessed marijuana with intent to sell, and that Hanson illegally possessed a handgun.

A hearing was set for Feb. 24. Bail for Hanson was set at $150,000 without conditions, or $100,000 with conditions including appear in court, do not leave Minnesota, abstain from alcohol and drugs and have no contact with Simpson.

District Court Judge Leland Bush said Hanson also faces probation violations related to three separate prior offenses in Lyon County. Probation violation hearings were set for Feb. 17.

Simpson was charged with two counts of third degree controlled substance crime – liability for crimes of another and fifth degree controlled substance crime – liability for crimes of another. A complaint alleges Simpson or an accomplice possessed marijuana with intent to sell. Bail for Simpson was set at $30,000 without conditions, or $15,000 with conditions including appear in court, do not leave Minnesota, abstain from alcohol and drugs and have no contact with Hanson. A hearing was set for Feb. 24.
