Clarkfield man who got away from authorities taken into custody the next day

YELLOW MEDICINE COUNTY – A Clarkfield man who led the Yellow Medicine Sheriff’s Department in a pursuit in vehicle and on foot Wednesday was taken into custody Thursday morning.

About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the city of Clarkfield, a Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s deputy tried to take Matthew Nelson, 30, of Clarkfield into custody on a felony warrant, the sheriff’s department said.

After a short scuffle with Nelson, he was able break away and entered his 1985 Chevy pickup and fled the area.

Deputies pursued Nelson for several miles while items were falling out of his pickup and off of a trailer he was pulling, the sheriff’s office said. After driving through multiple bean and cornfields, Nelson exited his vehicle in the middle of a cornfield and fled on foot, the sheriff’s department said. Multiple agencies assisted in the search of Nelson to no avail. The search was discontinued at 7:30 p.m.

About 11 a.m. Thursday, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a person saying Nelson was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom of a house in Clarkfield, the sheriff’s department said.

That call resulted in Nelson being taken into custody by the sheriff’s department and transported to the Yellow Medicine County Jail pending charges.
