Small town, big crowd at V-Esta Day

MARSHALL — Vesta might be a small community, but it has a big appeal during the annual V-Esta Day celebration.
On Wednesday evening, more than 300 people showed up for a BBQ chicken supper during the event. Organizers sold all 240 of the chickens barbecued for the meal, said Jimmy Penske of the Vesta Lions Club.
“There was a little rain, but it must not have deterred people,” Penske said.
Besides the chicken dinner, events like a kids’ pedal tractor pull also had good attendance.
V-Esta Day has been well-attended for many years, but Penske said it’s still impressive to see the crowds.
“It’s always a surprise when that many people show up,” he said.
V-Esta Day has been a tradition in Vesta for 62 years. At first, the Vesta Commercial Club organized the event, and for the past several years the Lions Club picked it up. Penske said the club is thankful to the community for their support over the years.
This summer, one of the projects that V-Esta Day proceeds will support will be the city’s 125th anniversary celebrations, on Aug. 1-2. Penske said the anniversary festival will feature fireworks on Aug. 1, and a performance by Urbandale Lane on Aug. 2.
