Fatal grain bin accident reported near Milroy
One person pronounced dead at scene, Sheriff’s Office says
MILROY — One person was pronounced dead Wednesday morning after being trapped inside a grain bin near Milroy, the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said the victim’s identity will be released at a later date. The incident is still under investigation.
Around 9:33 a.m., the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a male trapped in a grain bin. Emergency services were dispatched to a farmstead located east of Milroy, on the 13000 block of Minnesota Highway 19. Responders worked to rescue the male party, but he was pronounced dead at the scene around 11:19 a.m.
Milroy Fire Chief Matthew Krueger said the Milroy Fire Department was aided by several area departments, including the Wabasso, Vesta, Walnut Grove, Lucan, Redwood Falls and Tracy Fire Departments, as well as the Marshall Fire Department’s technical rescue team. The Milroy First Responders, Wabasso Ambulance, CentraCare Ambulance, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources all responded at the scene.
Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said Wednesday’s accident was the third grain bin incident in the past three years that the technical rescue team has been called to. Team members were called to the scene of a fatal grain bin accident near Balaton in 2024, and to a grain bin accident near Porter in 2023. The Porter accident involved two men. One man was able to free himself from the grain, and one later died after being rescued.
There were two fatal grain bin accidents in the region last year. In May 2024, Bruce Larson of rural Balaton died after being trapped in grain. In August, Eric Kronback suffered fatal accidental injuries while trying to remove a small amount of grain from a bin at a rural Lamberton residence.
