Tyler Farr enjoys the college scene.

“I love that I kick off homecoming weekend for SMSU,” Farr told the Independent during an interview this week.

“Playing shows for college students brings a whole other energy, and I’m fired up to kick off the party.”

There’s a week left to go before the new Prairie Jam concert kicks off in Marshall. Farr, a concert headliner, said he’s looking forward to sharing both hit songs and new music with the crowd.

“I am truly honored to have been asked to perform at the first ever Prairie Jam to celebrate the city of Marshall,” he said.

Farr, who broke onto the country music scene in 2013 with the hit song and album “Redneck Crazy,” will be performing Sept. 29 at the Schwan Regional Event Center on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University. South Dakota-based country music duo Whiskey Rich will be concert’s opening act.

“Everyone seems really excited. People have been really talking about it,” Visit Marshall Director Cassi Weiss said of Prairie Jam. Organizers hope the concert can become an annual event, and for the first year they wanted to bring in a hit artist.

“We’re really happy to get (Tyler),” She said.

Farr said fans will get to hear a high-energy show, with some new music.

“My band always brings it — we will play our hits and some new tunes that I have been working with my label boss and co-producer, Jason Aldean,” Farr said.

In addition to performing, Farr said he has been working on a collaboration that will be coming out at the beginning of next year.

“I’m getting back to my roots musically and I can’t wait for the fans to hear it,” he said. “And yes, I’ll be playing this song Thursday night at Prairie Jam.”

A Missouri native, Farr is the first artist signed to Aldean’s Night Train Records/BBR Music Group. Farr has three No. 1 songs to his credit, including “Redneck Crazy,” “A Guy Walks Into a Bar,” and “Whiskey in My Water,” which was also his first No. 1 as a songwriter. His debut and sophomore albums both debuted in the Top 5 on the Billboard Top 200 albums and Billboard Country Albums Charts. In 2017, Farr even got his own reality TV series, “A Little Too Farr.”

Weiss said there’s been a great response to Prairie Jam from the Marshall community.

“Right away, the response from sponsors and community businesses has been awesome,” she said. Organizers hope that ticket sales will be strong enough to make Prairie Jam an annual event, Weiss said.

Tickets for Prairie Jam are available online at https://visitmarshallmn.com/prairie-jam. Doors for the event open at 5 p.m. on Sept. 29. Whiskey Rich take the stage at 6:15, and Tyler Farr performs at 7 p.m.

The fun at Prairie Jam won’t be limited to the concert. A pre party event is planned starting at 3 p.m. at Tavern 507 in Marshall, the Visit Marshall website said. After the concert, a post party will be held downtown at the Gambler, Visit Marshall said.
