Two injured in Saturday morning crash, driver charged
COTTONWOOD — Two people were injured in a single-vehicle crash reported early Saturday morning west of Cottonwood, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reported.
A 28-year-old Balaton man who was driving the vehicle was arrested and charged with criminal vehicular operation and DWI, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A bail hearing was held for Trace Thomas Botsford in Lyon County District Court on Monday. A criminal complaint alleges Botsford drove under the influence of alcohol, which resulted in his pickup leaving the road and rolling, injuring two passengers.
The crash was reported at 2:09 a.m. Saturday near 270th Avenue and Lyon County Road 10, the Sheriff’s Office said. Two female passengers in the crashed vehicle were injured and transported by ambulance to Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.
Court documents identified the two passengers as Kaitlyn Robins and Erica Holmes. The complaint said Robins was later flown to Sioux Falls for a life threatening injury.
More information on the injured passengers’ condition was not available Monday.
At Monday’s hearing, bail for Botsford was set at $20,000 without conditions, or $10,000 bond or $1,000 cash with conditions including that Botsford appear in court and abstain from the use of alcohol and drugs, court records said. A future hearing date was set for May 17.
