Detour on U.S. 59 starts Thursday

Construction zone will run from Garvin corner to Highway 30 in Murray Co.

MARSHALL — Detours on U.S. Highway 59 in Lyon and Murray counties will start Thursday, as the Minnesota Department of Transportation replaces the concrete on the roadway. Part of Highway 59 will be closed for repairs that are scheduled to start the week of July 26.

The repairs will affect Highway 59 from the intersection with U.S. Highway 14 near Garvin, to just north of Highway 30 in Murray County, MnDOT said. Portions of deteriorating concrete in the roadway will be cut out and replaced with new concrete. The road surface will also be smoothed out with a process called diamond grinding.

The affected part of Highway 59 will be closed for about eight weeks, MnDOT said. Traffic will be detoured onto Highway 14, Lyon County Road 5 and Murray County Road 29, and Murray County Road 12.

Homes and businesses along Highway 59 will remain accessible during construction, MnDOT said. Access to Lake Shetek will also be available using Murray County Road 48 from Murray County Road 29 on the detour route.

Motorists should also be prepared for another detour that will be put in place in the Marshall area in the next few weeks, MnDOT said. Concrete repairs will be made on U.S. 59 from Minnesota Highway 23 in Marshall to Lyon County Road 6. The detour for the Marshall construction zone will go into effect in about four to six weeks, and will use Lyon County Road 6, South Saratoga Street (Lyon County Road 35), and Highway 23.

Construction on the $1.7 million highway project is scheduled to be completed by mid-September, MnDOT said.
