MnDOT holds virtual open house for Hwy 59 construction

MARSHALL — Road construction is coming to two stretches of U.S. Highway 59 south of Marshall this summer, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation is urging area residents to learn more at an online open house event.

Area residents can submit questions or comments online for the next two weeks, said Mandi Lighthizer-Schmid, director of public engagement for MnDOT District 8.

The planned construction will affect two different segments of Highway 59 — possibly at the same time — and repair portions of the concrete roadway on both segments, MnDOT said. The repairs will involve completely removing parts of the road, and then replacing them with new concrete. In addition, the roadway will undergo diamond grinding to remove road surface imperfections caused by construction.

One construction segment will be from the intersection of Highway 59 and U.S. Highway 14 near Garvin, south to the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 30 in Murray County. Construction on the Garvin highway segment is planned to start in July, and should take around seven weeks to complete, MnDOT said.

Next, a segment of Highway 59 will be under construction, from the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 23 in Marshall, south to the intersection of Highway 59 and Lyon County Road 6. That construction should take about five weeks to complete, MnDOT said. However, construction south of Marshall could get started before the construction near Garvin is finished.

Both segments of construction will require detours, MnDOT said. The detour near Marshall will use Saratoga Street and Lyon County Road 6, while the detour near Garvin will route traffic through Balaton on Lyon County Road 5 and Murray County Road 29.

Construction is planned to be complete in October.

Members of the public can learn more about the planned construction online, as well as leave comments or questions, at https://hwy59improvements.com/. The open house web page will be open through construction, but the ability to submit questions or comments through the page will only be open for the next two weeks, Lighthizer-Schmidt said.
