Drug task force locates meth lab in rural Cottonwood

YELLOW MEDICINE COUNTY — Members of a regional drug task force found a liquid methamphetamine lab when they searched a rural Cottonwood residence last week.

Task force agents recovered more than 3 pounds of meth, as well as an incendiary device, said Sgt. Ross Ardoff of the CEE-VI Drug and Gang Task Force.

CEE-VI, which is based out of Willmar, executed a search warrant on Thursday in rural Yellow Medicine County near Cottonwood. During the search, agents found a suspected meth conversion lab, where meth in liquid form is converted into crystal form, Ardoff said in a news release. Task force members found around 3.55 pounds of meth in various stages of conversion, as well as chemicals and equipment commonly used to convert methamphetamine into crystals, Ardorff said.

The task force also found a Molotov cocktail type of incendiary device in the residence. The device was later disposed of by the Bloomington Bomb Squad. Ardoff said Bay West Environmental Services was also contacted to help with cleanup and disposal of chemicals found at the residence.

The incident is still under investigation, Ardoff said. The CEE-VI Task Force was assisted by the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office in the incident.
