Moving one step at a time

Workers take large furniture out of city hall to begin process

MARSHALL — Marshall city office workers are preparing to go to college — and they’re taking their own desks and chairs.

City of Marshall Municipal Building offices will soon be moved to temporary office space at Southwest Minnesota State University Social Sciences Building. The temporary office locations will be occupied for about a year-and-a-half to allow for the renovation of the current city offices located at 344 W. Main St.

Quist Moving Co. began the moving process Monday morning.

“They’re moving the larger furniture first,” said Marshall City Administrator Sharon Hanson. The staff will have temporary furniture while still working on Main Street.

“We don’t have computer connections set up yet at SMSU,” said Hanson.

The full relocation to SMSU will start Dec. 30, and city offices will not be fully operational until Jan. 6.

Although the staff will make every effort to ensure quality service, residents and visitors may experience delays during the week of Dec. 30, according to a city news release. Customers who need access to city services during this time are encouraged to call the main City Hall phone number at 507-537-6760.

One thing that won’t change is the address for mail. During the estimated year and half renovation period, the city’s address for United States Postal Service mailings will remain the same address of 344 W. Main St.

Marshall residents needing city services won’t have to worry about getting a special SMSU parking sticker or getting a parking ticket. For city office needs while at SMSU, visitors will have designated “City Office Visitor Parking” available to them, and signs will be posted to direct visitors to the temporary offices.
