Recycling on Lyon County agenda

Commissioners may discuss curbside pickup again at board meeting

MARSHALL — The future of the Lyon County recycling program will be back before the county board this morning. While there isn’t a specific mention of curbside recycling pickup on the agenda, Lyon County Administrator Loren Stomberg said Monday he expects county commissioners may talk about how to bring the service back after the county’s contract with Southwest Sanitation expires.

Discussion of Lyon County’s recycling program is slated for today’s regular commissioner meeting, as well as an item on possibly declaring existing county recycling sheds as surplus property for sale by sealed bids. County staff are recommending the sale of the sheds in Amiret, Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Green Valley, Lynd and Taunton, in preparation for the switch to collecting recyclables in roll-off containers.

Along with discussion of the recycling program, Lyon County Public Works Administrator Roger Schroeder will give an update to the board on the direction of the recycling program, Stomberg said.

Decisions by county commissioners to reject a pair of bids for hauling recyclables, and to switch to having county drop sites for recycling instead of curbside pickup, have generated a lot of public feedback over the past two weeks.

The board decisions came after the county’s current recycling hauler, Southwest Sanitation, gave notice that they planned to terminate their current contract. New recycling bids were opened in August, but the new bids from Southwest Sanitation and West Central Sanitation were both more costly than the current contract. Commissioners rejected the bids.

Both members of the public and area city officials have since spoken out in favor of keeping curbside recycling service.

Stomberg said Monday he has received communication from both the city of Marshall and the city of Tracy in support of keeping curbside pickup.
