Minneota man killed in crash

MINNEOTA — A one-vehicle crash killed a 69-year-old man early Tuesday morning near Minneota.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Richard Charles Downing of Minneota. The crash is still under investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash was reported around 4 a.m. Tuesday on the 3300 block of Lyon County Road 3, about a mile south of Minneota. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, a single vehicle was found in the west ditch. Downing, the vehicle’s only occupant, was found to have been ejected in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office released some additional details about the crash on Tuesday afternoon. However, it said the crash investigation was still ongoing. Downing was driving a 2005 GMC Envoy south on County Road 3, when the vehicle went into the ditch and overturned, the Sheriff’s Office said. It did not appear Downing was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Minneota Police, the Minneota Fire Department and First Responders, and North Memorial Ambulance all responded at the crash scene.
