Lyon County will look for new carnival for 2020 fair

MARSHALL — The good news is the Lyon County Fair 2019 was successful, according to a report delivered to the Lyon County Board.

The bad news is the carnival is booked elsewhere and won’t be available for Lyon County Fair 2020.

Board Commissioner Paul Graupmann, who is on the fair committee, announced at Tuesday morning’s meeting that the Todd Armstrong Show isn’t available on the usual fair date.

“One option was we could possibly get them if the fair was two weeks earlier, but that would be devastating on the rodeo,” Graupmann said. The rodeo has national champions in Lyon County who would be affected by a change of date.

“We’re going to stick with the same date (the second week in August) and try to find a different carnival,” he said.

There is a lot of competition for booking carnivals for county fairs and the Lyon County Fair board will have to “scramble” to find one to replace the Todd Armstrong Show, said Graupmann.

But if money is an indication of success, Graupmann said, at the special fair board meeting he attended he learned that, while the “money is still going out and coming in,” receipts show that the fair was well-attended.

“The money brought in last year was double the previous year and this year was 50 percent on top of that,” he said.
