School board OKs referendum resolutions

MARSHALL — Resolutions involving canvassing returns of votes and starting the process to issue general obligation bonds in the passage of a $29.8 million building referendum were approved by the Marshall Public School Board Monday.

According to the canvassing resolution, 1,950 votes were cast in favor of the referendum during the May 14 election. The resolution stated that 1,180 voted against it.

“I would like to thank our public for their votes,” board member Bill Swope said before the 5-0 vote in favor of the canvassing resolution. He said the the 62% to 38% voting margin “was excellent.”

“For all those who voted to replace West Side (elementary), keep up the security at our buildings, a special thank you to the community,” he said.

The resolution authorized to certify the results of the election to the county auditor.

According to the resolution to start the process of authorizing the sale of bonds, the district retained Ehlers & Associates, Inc., in Roseville, as its independent municipal advisor for the bonds. Ehlers & Associates is authorized to solicit proposals in accordance with Minnesota statutes.

The referendum was a single-question ballot that included:

• New second- through fourth-grade elementary school located on a 52-acre site near the existing Marshall Middle School.

• Three-classroom Early Childhood addition at Park Side Elementary, improvements to serve Park Side first-grade students and removal of the existing portable classroom.

• Centralized Early Childhood programming at Park Side Elementary and providing additional space at Marshall Middle School

• Safety and security improvements at Park Side Elementary, the new elementary school, MATEC and Marshall High School

• West Side Elementary to be decommissioned, demolished, prepared for future development and sold

Also on Monday, the board voted to approve another part of a three-year carpet installation project at Park Side Elementary. Approval included the bid of $31,016 from Mike’s Flooring in Marshall.
