Electrical fire inside apartment displaces occupants

MARSHALL — An electrical fire in the bathroom of one of the units at the RC Square Apartments on Wednesday night displaced the people living there. But because the fire was contained, neighboring units were able to keep heat and power in bitterly cold temperatures, the Marshall Fire Department said.

The fire was reported around 10 p.m. at the RC Square complex, which is located along Birch Street. Marshall firefighters and police worked in temperatures 25 degrees below zero, Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said.

Brunsvold said residents of the building where the fire was reported were evacuated to common areas of other buildings in the complex where they could stay warm.

“Basically, anybody in that structure we evacuated immediately until we knew where the (fire’s) origin was,” he said.

The origin of the fire turned out to be the attic above a bathroom in one of the apartment units, and the fire was contained to the bathroom, Brunsvold said.

The rest of the building was still habitable, he said.

Brunsvold said the Red Cross was contacted to help the residents displaced by the fire.

Brunsvold said the conditions firefighters faced Wednesday were also a reminder to Marshall residents to make sure they clear away snow from hydrants near them. The firefighters responding at RC Square had to dig through snow to get to a fire hydrant.

“The best thing for us is to have a three-foot space around the hydrant, and a clear path to the street,” Brunsvold said.
