Snow and wind expected today, low temps through the weekend

MARSHALL — Another winter storm is headed to southwest Minnesota, and the National Weather Service is urging caution while traveling. Several inches of snow, combined with wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour, could lead to drifting snow on roads and reduced visibility.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Lyon and Lincoln counties until midnight tonight. Total snow accumulations could be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches, the NWS said.

The heaviest snow in today’s storm is expected to fall in a band just south of Lyon County, said Peter Rogers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls. It’s less certain how much snow will fall right outside that band, Rogers said, but it’s estimated that the Marshall area will get around 5 inches of snow. NWS forecasts said snow was likely to start falling in southwest Minnesota around the morning commute time, and stop this evening.

Unlike the last winter storm to come through the Marshall area, this one is not likely to bring freezing rain. Temperatures will be cold enough for the precipitation to be all snow, Rogers said. However, the region will also be seeing northeast wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour, which could lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow.

After the snow stops, southwest Minnesota is in for some winter chills.

“We are looking at some pretty cold temperatures” in the Marshall area over the weekend, Rogers said. The high temperature for Saturday will only be 5 degrees, and wind chills could reach 25 degrees below zero.
