Bitter cold, snow slated for next week’s forecast

MARSHALL – If you think it’s been cold this week — you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. After “snow beginning Sunday and into Monday morning with a potential accumulation of 2 to 4 inches,” said Matthew Dux, National Weather Service meteorologist for the Sioux Falls, S.D., office, “temperatures are set to drop fairly sharply starting Tuesday.”

Temperatures will “struggle to keep above zero” and we will see highs of -2 and -3 Tuesday through Friday with wind chills of -30 to -50.

Dux said anytime the wind chill drops to 20 below, it gets to “dangerous” territory.

“We are approaching life-threatening temperatures the middle of next week,” he said.

“Wind chill is a term used to describe what the air temperature feels like to the human skin due to the combination of cold temperatures and winds blowing on exposed skin,” According to weather.gov. “The colder the air temperature and the higher the wind speeds the colder it will feel on your skin if you’re outside.”

These low temperatures are typical this time of year, he said.

“Every winter we have a couple of these stretches,” Dux said.

After next week, the weather should be more tolerable with temperatures in the 20s, Dux said.
