Food drives and donations helping out Kitchen Table Food Shelf

MARSHALL — Christmas is a time to receive presents and a time to give as well. Wes Pronk, Ty Brouwer, Joe Hasse and Brad Minnehan from Buffalo Ridge Gobblers, the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, hauled in six cases of frozen turkeys to the Kitchen Table Food Shelf Friday morning.

A similar donation has been made every year for at least seven or eight years, they said.

The 26 turkeys, purchased this year from Brad’s Market in Minneota, are among the donations that Lori Lerohl collects throughout the year, but in particular during the holiday season.

“This is Minnesota Nice territory,” Lerohl said. “The food drives are coming in from schools and churches, people bring in one or two turkeys, one person brought in 12 hams. We are really fortunate in this area.”

Another donation Friday was from Chad Lozinski, a local representative from Christensen Farms, who presented a $1,000 pork certificate to Lerohl and Community Resource Coordinator Margaret Palan.

The Kitchen Table Food Shelf sees a steady flow of clients and Lerohl said it will likely increase if President Donald Trump’s 2019 budget proposal goes into effect. The new regulations would cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) by more than $213 billion over the next 10 years — or by nearly 30 percent. With the federal government making plans to decrease funding to food support programs, state government then often steps up.

“Rep. Collin Peterson stopped by last spring and told us they would increase the amount of food funding to make up for federal decreases,” Lerohl said. “Our usage will then go up, but we’ll be ready for it.”
