Minneota to celebrate Boxelder Bug Days

MINNEOTA — There will be dancing in the streets in Minneota this weekend as the 2018 Boxelder Bug Days annual event gets underway.

Singing sensation Kayla Daniels will be kicking off the weekend today beginning at 9 p.m. Boxelder Bug Day attendees can enjoy additional performances from Daniels again at 1:30 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. Saturday. She will be performing on the main stage.

Saturday’s line up begins at 6 a.m. with the 21st annual Johnny Tillemans Memorial Chili Cook-off in Veterans Park. Judging will begin at 11 a.m. Anyone interested in taste-testing the chili cook-off entries can do so at 11:30 a.m.

There will also be a Smokin’ BBQ Cook-Off with registration beginning at 7 a.m. Taste-testing for this event will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday and again at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday in Veterans Park.

Registration for the 5K/10K run/walk and kiddie run begins a 7:45 a.m. and runs until 8:15 a.m. Child care available for participants provided by Bethel Fellowship. Run the Bug kiddie run begins at 8 a.m. The 5K/10K run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m.

The Vietnam Memorial and the History Center will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and again Sunday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. On Saturday, they will be serving pulled pork sandwiches beginning at noon.

Also beginning at 9 a.m. is the FFA Petting Zoo which will be held in Veterans Park.

The 3-man scramble golf tournament tees off at 9 a.m. at the Countryside Golf Club.

From 9 a.m.-3 p.m. the craft sale and lunch will be served at the Senior Center. There will also be a craft vendor sale at Veterans Park’s west lot.

Friends of the Library will be hosting a book sale at the library from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and again on Sunday from 11 a.m.-1p.m. On Saturday, there will also be educational exhibits from noon-4 p.m. at the Minneota Public Library.

The kiddie parade registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the small stage. The kiddie parade will commence at 11 a.m.

Also for the kids, the pedal tractor pull is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in Gislason’s back lot. Registration begins at 11 a.m.

Inflatables will be available from noon-6 p.m. Wristbands will be required. Also at noon, there will be a youth bean bag tournament for ages 12 and under and 13-16. The bean bag tournament will be on Highway 68.

Don’t miss the famous boxelder bug races beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the small stage.

The Saturday afternoon activities continue with the PTA dunk tank from 1-3 p.m. and the Minneota Barrel Race Series at 1 p.m. in the Silver Spur Arena.

Adults can take their turn at a bean bag tournament on Highway 68 beginning at 2 p.m. Be sure to register beginning at 1:30 p.m. There will be 100 percent payout to winners, Boxelder Bug Days Committee members said.

Two Hicks and a Chick will perform at 5 p.m. Saturday, and again at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the Boxelder Bug Day queen coronation will take place on the main stage. Attendees will see firsthand who will reign for the upcoming year.

Attendees can wrap up the evening by taking in the street dance featuring the band Avenger Joe which will perform from 8:30 p.m.-1 a.m.

On Sunday, the Minneota firefighters will be serving a pancake breakfast at the fire hall from 8-11 a.m.

At 10 a.m., there will be a community worship service.

The Vietnam Memorial and History Center will be open again from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Also at 11 a.m. Sunday, attendees can enjoy Minneota Area Mission Trip roast beef sandwiches as well as dessert at Friends of the Library pie sale, both at Boxelder Bug Square.

The grand parade will commence at 1 p.m., including a performance of Captain Jack Sparrow, with Sparrow appearing at Boxelder Bug Square following the parade.

Attendees can also enjoy a Rainbow Country carriage ride Sunday following the parade.

Boxelder Bug Days wraps up with a golf ball roll competition Sunday at 3 p.m.
