New events adds some adventure to YMC Fair

Cottonwood’s Coming Home Days and draft horse show also this weekend

CANBY — You might say the Yellow Medicine County Fair is on the cutting edge of summer fun. But don’t forget the Coming Home Days in Cottonwood and the Murray County Classic Draft Horse Show.

According to Fair Secretary Melissa Denelsbeck, the Yellow Medicine County Fair added two new events to its three-day affair, which starts today.

Tonight’s lawnmower demolition is one of the new events. It starts at 7 p.m. along with the traditional demolition derby in front of the grandstand.

“We got the idea from Big Stone County. We’ve never done it here,” Denelsbeck said. She explained that contestants will rent mowers already retrofitted for the demolition event.

But if you are looking for some twists, turns and riddles, you might want to show up at 11 a.m. Saturday and try out the Escape Room. That is the other new event.

Denelsbeck said the Escape Room is an adventure game in which players solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints, and strategy to complete the objectives at hand.

Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the rooms.

This escape room is on wheels and will be at the fairgrounds until 3 p.m. Denelsbeck said two-thirds of the 30-minute sessions are already reserved, but she said the Escape Room may stay past 3 p.m. if enough interested people show up.

Besides the usual 4-H animals and amusement rides, the fair will also offer music by the Wendinger Polka Band on Friday and the Herrlinger Family Band on Saturday.

The Cottonwood Coming Home Days will start Friday with a Community Center open house 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and a fireworks display that starts at dusk.

On Saturday, a 5K walk and run will start at 7:30 a.m. with registration. Other events include kiddie carnival, car show, bingo, RC airplane flight demonstration, splash dance, medallion hunt, bean bag tournament, kiddie tractor pull, kiddie tractor pull and a dunk tank.

The Cottonwood Ambulance Service Burger Feed will be held at Central Park 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The draft show starts Friday with gates opening at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the gates open at 9 a.m., with the draft horse show starting at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the gates open at 9 a.m., and the draft horse show starts at 12:30 p.m.
