‘Amazing 10 years’ to end

Family Video closing; owners selling building

MARSHALL — Video aficionados flocked to Family Video Tuesday afternoon to take advantage of lower prices on videos and games. Family Video has announced it is closing the College Drive location at the end of June after selling as much merchandise as possible, said general manager Mike Madsen.

“We’re going to close this location, sell the building, maybe split the (Family Video) space in two for two businesses,” said Madsen.

Madsen said the store is too big to make a profit — “3,000 square feet is too much,” he said.

“Thanks to Marshall (for its business),” Madsen said. “It’s been an amazing 10 years.”

The store is owned by Highland Ventures Ltd. out of Chicago, Ill. The building was built 10 years ago, and Jimmy John’s sandwich shop became a tenant soon after. Jimmy John’s will stay in business.

“We might open up something smaller here in town,” he said.

Videos have been flying off the shelves since word of the closing has spread.

“I sold 2,400 in one day,” Madsen said.

Ken Naylor of Marshall had an armload of videos to buy Tuesday afternoon.

“I have some old (movies) and some new ones,” he said. “Some scary ones and some funny ones.”

A regular customer, he said he was sorry to see Family Video go.

“It was a way to get out of the house, talk to people,” Naylor said. “Someone might be looking at a video and saying, ‘I don’t know…’ and you could tell them you saw it and they should give it a try.”

Naylor said he knows that downloading movies from the Internet and Redbox automated kiosks have taken a toll on video retailers.
