Balancing success

Award-winning Prestige Gymnastics team members qualify for state

Photo by Karin Elton Southwest School of Dance members have won awards and all nine of the Prestige Gymnastics team members qualified for state.

LYND — In her first year of business, Lyndwood Center owner Larvita McFarquhar is racking up the success stories. The center, which houses Prestige Gymnastics and the Southwest School of Dance, has only been open since November.

“Our gymnastics team has been competing at a couple of competitions and all of our gymnasts have qualified for the state tournament,” she said.

The state tournament is today through Sunday at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Participating in the 2017 Xcel and JO Levels 6-10 State meet are Kendall Walerius, 10; Izzy Colvin, 10; Sydney Kramer, 12; Hailey Hinze, 11; Cameen McFarquhar, 11; Jocalynn McFarland, 12; Kyalin Garside, 11; Jocelyn Schlenner, 12; and Amelia Clarin, 11.

“Jocelyn won all-around in the last meet,” said McFarquhar.

Hinze got 7th in vault, 10th in uneven bars, 5th in floor exercise and 8th in all around at All American Invitational in Sioux Falls S.D. McFarland got 12th on the balance beam, 11th on floor exercise and 10th in the all-around at the Gopher Invite in Blaine. Cameen McFarquhar got 1st on vault, 5th on balance beam, 1st on floor exercise and 1st in all-around at the Gopher Invite in Blaine. Schlenner got 2nd on vault, 1st on uneven bars, 3rd on balance beam, 1st on floor exercise and 1st in the all around at All American Invitational in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The girls will compete on the vault, bars, beam and floor. They compete individually and then their scores are compiled for a team score.

The girls practice from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lyndwood Center in Lynd.

Southwest School of Dance dancers competed at the DanZa regional competition March 11 in Minneapolis and received several awards.

The dancers, Taliya McFarquhar, Sephi McFarquhar, Cameen McFarquhar and Avianna McFarquhar, are McFarquhar’s daughters, and are experienced gymnasts, but had limited dance experience.

The girls, who are ages 11, 12, 15 and 17, competed in the 15-16 acro dance division and achieved “impressive results,” said McFarquhar. “Although acro dance is scored on 50 percent dance and 50 percent gymnastics, their dance, ‘Belleville Rendezvous,’ choreographed by Charlotte Wendel, won first in its division, high scoring small group, and the entertainment award. Finally, ‘Belleville Rendezvous’ won the Zenith award, which is highest scoring in the completion.”

In July, the dancers will compete at the DanZa National Finals at Wisconsin Dells, Wis.
