SMSU Briefs for Sept. 5

Family Weekend Sept. 21-23

Family weekend will be Sept. 21-23 at Southwest Minnesota State University.

SMSU sets aside a weekend every year for students to invite parents, siblings, grandparents and other family members to campus to take part in a weekend of events and activities.

On Friday, Sept. 21, events start at 1 p.m. in the Student Center. Doug’s Wire Writing will be making your name out of wire for free from 1-5 p.m. At 7 p.m. there will be a Planetarium show, “From Earth to the Universe,” and a Take 2 Improv show starts at 8 p.m.

Saturday features many events, with cotton candy at Commons Central from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., and an 11:30 a.m. brunch, where President Connie J. Gores will give the welcome. The Mustang football team hosts Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. A Chemistry Club reaction show is available at 4 p.m., and a post-game open house with a dessert bar will be at the Campus Religious Center.

On Sunday, The Coffeehouse will be open from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. There will be a 1 p.m. soccer game at the Schwan Regional Event Center and a 7 p.m. free movie hosted by the Student Activities Committee (SAC).

From 5-7 p.m. there will be a Bridges International “Adopt A College Family Kickoff” at the REC Plaza.

Recital by Dr. Anna DeGraff on Sept. 10

Dr. Anna DeGraff (mezzo-soprano), adjunct music instructor, will perform a recital, “Songs of the Muse: The Life of Winnaretta Singer, Princesse de Polignac,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in Marshall (100 Church Street).

DeGraff will be assisted by Dr. Mary Ermel Walker on piano.

This recital is based on Winnaretta Singer, the heiress to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune who used her enormous wealth to support charitable causes and the advancement of the arts. It features songs composed by musicians whose music she championed during her adult life in Paris.

This event is free and open to the public.
