MARSHALL — The Marshall Tigers girls hockey team defeated the Waseca Bluejays 3-2 on Friday evening.

The Tigers got the scoring started with an unassisted goal by Eliza Holmgren, her fourth of the season to give the Tigers the early lead with 13:46 remaining in the first period.

The Bluejays would tie up the game with an unassisted goal by themselves with 9:32 left in the period.

The Tigers outshot the Bluejays 10-8 and the score was tied 1-1 after the 1st.

The Bluejays quickly scored in the opening of the second period but the Tigers had the equalizer tying up the game with an unassisted goal by Abigail Foley, her third of the season. The Tigers had an opportunity to score in the power play when the Bluejays were called for a penalty but failed to capitalize on that.

At the end of two periods, the score was tied up at 2-2. The Tigers outshot the Bluejays again 10-5.

The Tigers would take the lead on Foley’s second goal of the night and fourth of the season. She was assisted on the goal by Kalyn DeVlieger. Foley’s goal turned out to be the game-winning goal and the Tigers defeated the Bluejays 3-2.

The Tigers outshot the Bluejays 11-4 in the final period and 31-17 overall.

Eighth-grader Lily Stelter made her first varsity start and had 15 saves on the night in the victory.

“I think the team came out kinda slow in the first but got it together in the second and third periods,” Tigers head coach Cassie Weiss said. “As for Lily, to be thrown in there, I thought she did a phenomenal job.”

The game was Foley’s first multiple-goal game and first game-winning goal this season.

“I think that we did pretty good,” Foley said. “I give the credit to Stelter for all of her good saves. I also give credit to my linemates Brooklyn Mauch and DeVlieger because a lot of what I do come from there passes to me.”

The Marshall Tigers girls hockey team (9-10-3) will be back in action today as they travel to play Minnesota River High School.
