SMSU TENNIS: SMSU closes season with loss at NSIC Tournament

MINNETONKA – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s tennis team had its season come to a close on Saturday afternoon dropping a 4-0 match in the quarterfinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at Lift Time Fitness Oakdale.

SMSU, the No. 8 seed, was playing in its first NSIC Tournament since 2010. Augustana, the No. 1 seed and winners of the last eight NSIC Tournament championships, has now won 23 consecutive tournament matches.

On Saturday, the Vikings won the doubles point as the Mustangs’ No. 1 doubles team of Hannah Starke and Daniela Flores lost 6-2, while SMSU’s No. 2 team of Paige Janka and Cora Delich lost by a 6-1 score.

In singles play, SMSU’s Fatima Murphy lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Hanna Himmelman dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match at No. 6. The Vikings secured the match at No. 4, as SMSU’s Olivia Watzke lost 6-0, 6-1. The matches at No. 2, 3 and 5 were not finished due to tournament rules.

SMSU closes its season with a 13-12 overall record. The 13 victories marks the program’s highest total since the 1992 season.
