SMSU TENNIS: SMSU snaps losing skid to MSU Mankato

ST. PETER – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s tennis team earned its first victory over Minnesota State since 2003, snapping a 15-match losing streak, earning a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.

SMSU, which is now 12-9 overall, 3-6 NSIC, lost in straight sets at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the Mustangs earned straight set victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Daniela Flores picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4, Hannah Starke won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5, while Hanna Himmelman secured a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6. Olivia Watzke sealed the victory for SMSU at No. 4 with a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win.

In doubles play, Watzke and Gabby Potthoff clinched the victory with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Starke and Delich also earned a 7-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Southwest Minnesota State returns to St. Peter on Tuesday for a pair of non-conference matches. The Mustangs face Bethany Lutheran College at 10 a.m. and Gustavus at 3 p.m.
