PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall’s Saphi McFarquhar earns trip to state

REDWOOD FALLS – The Marshall gymnastics team competed in the Section 3A meet Saturday, coming in fifth out of eight teams with a score of 123.750. Worthington (141.750) and Martin County Area (133.675) took the top two spots to earn a trip to the state tournament as a team.

While the Tigers didn’t reach state as a group, they will still be represented at the Class A meet next weekend. Saphi McFarquhar will be making her second consecutive appearance at state after earning a third-place finish in the all-around. McFarquhar recored an 8.675 on vault, 8.725 on the uneven bars, 8.825 on the balance beam and 8.050 on the floor exercise for an all-around score of 34.275.

“Going into state, we need to clean up a couple of things with the routine and just have that confidence built so she’ll go out there and do it,” Marshall coach Larvita McFarquhar said. “She didn’t have a lot of time last week to work on new skills, so we’ll be working on perfecting those skills this week.”

Adding to the Marshall effort was Cameen McFarquhar with scores of 8.775 on vault, 7.600 on bars, 6.275 on beam and 7.925 on floor for an all-around score of 30.575 while Kaitlyn Matzner scored an 8.150 on vault, 6.100 on bars, 8.500 on beam and 7.375 on floor for an all-around score of 30.125. Jordyn Kack added 5.500 on bars and 7.300 on beam while Reagan Brandt had a 7.350 on floor and Leah Matzner had an 8.275 on vault for the Tigers.

Coach McFarquhar said she was very proud of the way her team competed, especially from a couple of her seniors in Kack and Kaitlyn Matzner.

“I was so proud of them. Jordyn went out there despite an injury and boosted the spirit of the team and led them,” coach McFarquhar said. “I was also pleased with Kaitlyn Matzner, she was trying new skills and had the highest score she’s gotten on the beam. I was really happy for her to end it that way in her senior year.”

The Class A individual and all-around meet will be held on Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. in the Maturi Pavilion at the University of Minnesota.
