PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Canby, WWG open Section 3A tournament with pair of wins

CANBY — The No. 8 seed Canby Lancers entered Thursday night’s Section 3A Tournament opening round game against No. 9 seed Dawson-Boyd looking to snap a five-game losing streak. The Lancers did just that, defeating the Blackjacks 60-54.

Kayelee Johnson led the way for Canby with 18 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Morgan Cleveland added 16 points and seven rebounds in the win, while Hannah Jelen finished with 15 points.

Avery Bartunek led DB with 23 points. Mary Bothun added 14 points in the loss, while Alex Sather recorded 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Dawson-Boyd ends the season with a 7-14 record. Canby (7-18) travels to Minneota on Saturday to face the No. 1-seeded Minneota Vikings. Opening tip is set for 11 a.m.

WESTBROOK — The No. 8-seeded Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team opened Section 3A Tournament play with a 39-31 win over No. 9 Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Thursday.

Grace Woelber connected on five 3-pointers to lead WWG in scoring with 22 points. Bethany Byers added seven points in the win, while Kelly Berglund finished with four points.

Kailee Haberman led the way for HLO/F with nine points.

WWG (5-17) travels to Hills on Saturday to face top-seeded Hills-Beaver Creek. Opening tip is set for 11 a.m.

Bentley Boike led DB with 15 points and six rebounds.

Jake Lee added 14 points in the win, while Colton Husby finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Elliott Korstad led YME with 17 points.

Dawson-Boyd (11-9) hosts Wabasso on Monday while YME (3-18) travels to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City today.

COTTONWOOD — The Minneota boys basketball team put up 49 second-half points on its way to an 89-56 win over Lakeview on Thursday night.

Logan Sussner led the way for Minneota with 31 points and 15 rebounds. Thomas Hennen recorded a triple-double in the win with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Jared Josephson added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists for Minneota.

Aaron Loe led Lakeview with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Tyler Imes added 15 points.

Minneota hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton tonight while Lakeview hosts Pipestone Area tonight.
