SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: Miessner named assistant track and field coach at SMSU

MARSHALL – Southwest Minnesota State University head track & field coach Dan Allen announced Tuesday the hiring of Riley Miessner as the program’s new assistant coach.

“Riley has knowledge of many event groups having been a decathlete, and having coached almost every event in track and field prior to coming to SMSU,” Allen said. “He is a great person, and will be a great fit for the Mustang track and field family. We are excited to have Riley join our staff.”

Miessner comes to SMSU after spending nearly two years an assistant coach at the University of Sioux Falls, where was responsible for coaching the vertical jumps and hurdles. During his one season at USF, he helped coach the 2018 women’s indoor and outdoor NSIC champion and an NCAA outdoor qualifier in the pole vault.

Prior to his tenure at USF, Miessner was an assistant coach at Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) for two seasons (2015-17). While at DWU, he coached five NAIA national qualifiers and nine all-conference honorees.

Miessner was a four-year letter winner in track & field at Black Hills State University (S.D.), competing in the decathlon and heptathlon. He set the school record in the heptathlon during the 2011 season.

Miessner is a 2014 graduate of BHSU with a degree in exercise science. He earned his master’s degree from DWU in educational policy and administration.
