MARSHALL – In front of a packed gymnasium, the Marshall dance team put on its annual hometown showcase, displaying various routines across multiple age and skill levels.

Marshall coach Emily Kern said since they don’t get too many opportunities to perform at home, it’s special to be able to display their skills for their hometown fans.

“We typically don’t have many performance opportunities at our home gym and don’t practice here, so anytime we can get exposure on a high school gym floor, it really benefits us because that’s what we’re competing on every weekend,” Kern said. “It’s also nice to have the support of the hometown fans because often times they aren’t going to be traveling three hours to watch us compete, so it’s just nice to have that community support here.”

The showcase featured all three Jazz teams and both Kick teams performing their competition dances, as well as performances from a few Just For Kix teams.

Kern said being able to have the younger programs is beneficial to the success of their middle school and high school teams and it’s great to be able to develop and support the dancers from a young age.

“It’s extremely beneficial; the Just For Kix program is kind of a feeder program for our team, so it’s nice to be able to have that support from a young age,” Kern said. “We’re all on the same page with teaching styles, technique and it’s really awesome to be able to watch the girls grow up in the dance world and then we get to see them when they make it to middle school and high school. It’s just nice to have that support from the young age and even start to build relationships with the girls when they’re young, so we have that repoire when they get to our team.”

Marshall will compete next weekend at the Waconia Invite on Saturday. Kern said as they continue their season, the biggest thing they’re look forward to is competing at the section tournament.

“I think what we’re most looking forward to is always our section tournament, which determines whether or not we compete at the state tournament,” Kern said. “That is in the first weekend in February so every competition leading up to that, we’re working towards sections and placing in the top three to qualify for state.”
