SMSU CROSS COUNTRY: SMSU ready for NSIC Championships

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s and men’s cross country teams return to action this Saturday competing at the annual Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships in Aberdeen, S.D.

The races will take place at Lee Park Golf Course with the men’s 8,000-meter race starting at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s 6,000-meter race at 11:15 a.m. The men’s race will have 12 teams competing while 15 teams will run in the women’s race.

SMSU head coach Dan Allen expects to have 10 athletes compete in the men’s race and eight athletes run in the women’s race.

At the 2017 NSIC Championships, the Mustang men finished ninth out of 12 teams with 259 points, while the women’s team finished 12th out of 15 with 349 points.

Bashir Aidrus was SMSU’s top finisher on the men’s side last season recording a sixth place finish out of 111 runners with a time of 24:55. He was the first SMSU runner to earn All-NSIC honors since the program was reinstated in 2012.

Kayla Jansky was the highest finisher for the Mustang women’s team last season running 23:41 to place 60th overall.

On the men’s side, Augustana has won the last nine conference championships while the University of Mary has won the women’s championship the past two seasons.

The NCAA Regional will take place on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Joplin, Mo., while the NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships will be held on Dec. 1, in Slipper Rock, Pa., as part of the NCAA DII Fall Sports Festival.
