BURNSVILLE – Southwest Minnesota State University senior quarterback Blake Gimbel has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his performance in SMSU’s 54-24 road victory over the University of Mary on Saturday afternoon.

Gimbel, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound native of Marshalltown, Iowa, completed 21 of 31 passes for 356 yards and tied a career-high with five touchdown passes, while also rushing for a one-yard touchdown. He completed touchdown passes of 38, 64, 10, 18 and 16 yards-all in the first half-in helping SMSU earn its second straight victory.

Gimbel also set an SMSU record for career completions in the victory. His 21 completions now gives him 785 in his career, surpassing the record of 769 set by Josh Shudlick from 2005-08.

It was Gimbel’s 10th career 300-yard passing game and the fourth time he has thrown five touchdown passes in a game. He enters this week’s game ranking first in school history in completing percentage (66.1), first in completions (785), second in passing touchdowns (70), third in total offense (8,170) and third in passing yards (8,474).

It’s the fifth time Gimbel, a 2013 graduate of Marshalltown High School, has earned NSIC Offensive Player of the Week accolades.

Southwest Minnesota State (2-3 NSIC) will host Minnesota Crookston (1-4 NSIC) this Saturday for Homecoming with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
