SMSU FOOTBALL: SMSU heads back to the road to face the University of Mary today

MARSHALL - Southwest Minnesota State University (1-3, 1-3 NSIC South) steps out of NSIC South divisional play for the next four weeks as it embarks a trip to Bismarck, N.D., to face the University of Mary (0-4, 0-4 NSIC North) today, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.

•SMSU earned its first victory of the season and snapped an 11-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 21-20 home win over Upper Iowa last Saturday in Marshall.

•SMSU opened this season with four games versus teams from the NSIC South Division, but will now face four straight NSIC North Division opponents, before closing the season with three games versus NSIC South foes starting on Oct. 27.

•UMary is winless this season and has had three consecutive 1-10 seasons.

DRIVE TIDBITS

•SMSU’s win last week broke an 11-game losing streak that dated back to week four (Sept. 23) last season at Bemidji State. Prior to Saturday, SMSU’s last victory came on Sept. 16, 2017, versus Minot State.

•The win on Saturday also snapped a 12-game losing streak in NSIC South Division games dating back to the final two games of the 2016 season.

•SMSU rushed for a season-high 137 yards in the win over UIU. SMSU entered the UIU game having rushed for just 88 total yards on 86 attempts in three weeks.

•SMSU was a combined 7 for 33 on third down conversions the first two games of the season, but in the last two weeks are a combined 15 for 34 on third down and 2 for 3 on fourth down.

•UMary is 0-4 overall, 0-4 NSIC North, following a 48-20 home loss to MSU Moorhead last Saturday night.

•UMary is coming off three straight 1-10 seasons and have lost 37 of its last 40 games since Nov. 1, 2014. UMary’s three victories since 2015 have all come against Minnesota Crookston.

•Junior transfer starting quarterback Jordan Velarde was injured in a week two loss to Bemidji State and has missed the last two games.

•True freshman quarterback Jason Hoekstra has started the last two games and has completed 39 of 76 passes for 380 yards with one touchdown and seven interceptions.

•Freshman running back Bryan Lumsden has rushed for a team-high 138 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries.

•Sophomore wide receiver Luke Little has caught a team-high 23 passes for 362 yards.
