AREA ATHLETICS: Marshall M Club announces 2018 inductees for Tiger Athletic HOF

MARSHALL – The Marshall M Club is proud to announce the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame 2018 inductees. Marshall High School has a long and proud tradition of excellence in all athletic programs and the M Club founded the Hall of Fame to recognize individuals for their outstanding accomplishments.

Four nomination categories have been established including; athlete, coach, school administrator, and community member. Individuals, who through distinguished achievement excelled in one or more Marshall Public Schools athletic programs, demonstrating dedication, excellence, and honor in representing Marshall Public Schools and the community of Marshall, qualify for consideration. The 2018 class of Tom Denevan, Mike Jacobs, Mark Smed, and Pam Stencel Schroeder epitomize the honor.

Tom Denevan is a 1986 graduate of Marshall High School. During his standout prep career at MHS, Tom represented the Tigers on the football field, the basketball court, and the baseball diamond. Tom excelled in all areas, becoming a ten-time letter winner across three sports. Tom was a member of the Southwest Conference all-conference team twice in football, twice in baseball, and three times in basketball. On the baseball diamond, Denevan finished his career with a .423 career batting average and earned Region 2AA all-region honors in both 1985 and 1986. On the hardwood, Denevan was a part of two Southwest Conference Championship teams and helped lead the Tigers to the Region 2AA championship game in 1986. He finished his high school career with a total of 1,220 career points. Tom excelled for the Tigers on the football field, helping lead the team to three consecutive Southwest Conference championships. Following his senior campaign, Tom was named to the Minneapolis Star Tribune all-state team, the St. Paul Pioneer Press all-state team, the WCCO radio all-state team, and represented Marshall in the Minnesota high school all-star game. Tom went on to play football collegiately, first earning a letter at Oregon St. before transferring and finishing his career for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits where he earned two more varsity letters.

Mike Jacobs served as a coach in the Marshall Public School district from 1977-2014. The long-time art teacher coached cross country for 33 years, serving as head coach for 32 seasons, and coached track and field from 1977-2014, including 21 years as the head boys’ coach. During his illustrious tenure as the head boys’ and girls’ cross country coach, Jacobs teams won a combined 32 Southwest Conference championships and made 15 team state tournament appearances. The Tiger boys’ cross country team finished as Class AA state runner up in 2002, and then won back-to-back MSHSL Class AA State Championships in 2003 and 2004. With Jacobs serving as the head coach, Marshall Tiger Cross Country had nineteen individuals earn all-state honors. Jacobs was a Section Coach of the Year six times and was the MN State CC Coach of the Year in 2001. On the track, Jacobs helped lead the Tiger boys team as the head coach from 1994-2014. The Tigers won the Southwest Conference five times during his tenure and sent numerous individuals to the state tournament. Mike Jacobs was inducted into the Minnesota State Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011.

Mark Smed graduated from Marshall High School in 1979. While a student at MHS, Mark competed for the Tigers in cross country, basketball, and track and field, earning a total of eight varsity letters. Mark’s natural leadership helped him serve as a team captain in both cross country and track and field, but it was on the basketball court where Mark excelled the most. Smed was a member of the Tiger varsity team three years, earning all-conference honors both his junior and senior year. Smed helped lead the Tigers to the Region 2AA Championship game in 1979 and while earning all-state honors and was finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state of Minnesota. Smed held MHS basketball records for most rebounds in a season (333), most career rebounds per game (15.1) and tied Terry Porter for best career points per game average (19.3). Following his standout prep career, Smed played basketball for Augustana College. He earned four varsity letters and was a three-time All North Central Conference selection, including the NCC Most Valuable Player in 1983. Mark Smed is second in all-time scoring at Augustana with 1,795 career points and the fourth all-time scoring leader in NCC history with 1,049 career points in league play. Smed was the first player taken in the tenth round of the 1983 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers, and later had an NBA tryout with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Indiana Pacers in 1989. He played basketball professionally in Sweden and Germany from 1983-1995. He was inducted in the Augustana College Hall of Fame in 1995.

Pam Stencel Schroeder is a member of the MHS class of 1993. Pam was a key member of the Tiger volleyball and basketball teams from 1991-1993. On the basketball court, Pam was a three time selection to the Southwest Conference all-conference team. She helped the Tiger girls’ basketball team qualify for the state tournament in 1993, becoming the first girls’ basketball team in school history to accomplish that feat. At the time of her graduation, she held the Tiger girls’ basketball records for career points (856), assists (211), steals (302), career three point field goals (37) and three point field goals made in a season (25). On the volleyball court, Pam Stencel was a three-year starter and played on three consecutive Southwest Conference championship teams. Pam helped guide the Tigers to the state tournament in 1990 and again in 1992, where they finished as the state runner-up. Stencel earned all-tournament team honors in the 1992 state tournament. After graduating from MHS, Pam went on to play volleyball at North Dakota State University. She was a two-time AVCA all-region selection and two-time Division II all-American. Pam was the 1993 NCC Conference freshman of the year, and a four time NCC all-conference team member. Pam was inducted into the NDSU Hall of Fame in 2013.

The M Club Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony will take place at the Red Baron Arena and Expo Center in Marshall on Oct. 13. Social hour will begin at 6:00 p.m., with the dinner and ceremony to follow. Tickets are available through the high school office, or from M Club board members.
