NCAA BASEBALL: Three Gophers earn spots in Northwoods League MLB Showcase

ROCHESTER – Three student athletes will represent the Gopher Baseball program at the Northwoods League’s 2018 Major League Dreams Showcase next Tuesday, with teams announced for the doubleheader on Monday morning.

Sophomore catcher Eli Wilson, playing this summer for the Willmar Stingers, redshirt freshman outfielder Drew Hmielewski of the Eau Claire Express, and rookie right-handed pitcher Joshua Culliver of the Waterloo Bucks will all put their talents on display at Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin. All three players will compete in the 4:05 p.m. game with Wilson on the “visiting” roster and his Minnesota teammates each on the “home” roster.

The annual Showcase features the top players from the Northwoods League this season as selected by MLB scouts. The student athletes each participate in a day of workouts before scouts before playing in their half of the doubleheader.

Proceeds from the game benefit the Northwoods League Foundation, an “organization that serves as a vehicle to transform a shared passion for baseball into positive change and support for communities” through grants, scholarships, and donations within each of the 20 Northwoods League team cities.
