SMSU BASEBALL: SMSU’s Heichel named second team All-NSIC

BURNSVILLE – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced on Tuesday that Southwest Minnesota State University sophomore outfielder Ben Heichel has been named second team All-NSIC.

The league’s 15 head coaches selected the all-conference teams.

Heichel, a native of North Mankato, led SMSU with a .349 batting average in 40 games with a team-high 53 base hits, including a team-high 19 doubles and five home runs. He also led the team in both on-base percentage (.429) and slugging percentage (.572), while finishing second on the team in both runs scored (35) and RBIs (31). He led SMSU with 17 multi-hit games and was second with seven multi-RBI games. Heichel closed the season with one four-hit game, four three-hit games and has 12 two-hit games.

In NSIC games only, Heichel finished third in the league in doubles (14), ninth in total bases (66), 10th in slugging percentage (.589), 13th in RBIs (24), 17th in base hits (40) and 18th in batting average (.357).

Heichel is a 2016 graduate of Mankato West High School.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the season 17-23 overall, 12-18 in the NSIC.
