PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Marshall boys place first, girls third at Big South Championships

PIPESTONE – Last season, the Marshall boys and girls track and field team saw a lot of success at the Big South Championships, with the girls taking first and the boys coming in second by just a few points. This season, the Tigers replicated that success, as it was the boys who reached that top plateau on Saturday with a team score of 181.5 while the girls took third with a score of 146.5.

Marshall boys coach Dave Sample said the senior leadership from their team really played a big part in all aspects throughout the meet.

“Definitely great senior leadership this year in all of the areas; Brock Pruszynski in high jump, Issac Fischer all around, they pull all the guys together. Billy Giannelli with pole vault, Seth Cattoor, Sam Rademacher, they definitely all play a big part in it,” he said. “Coming out, they each played a big part in taking on some individual events they normally wouldn’t and they were able to rally the younger kids, which is really important for this sport to try and get the dedication that’s needed to pull off a team victory.”

On the girls side, coach Marie Sample said she’s really proud of the team effort and was pleased with how the team stepped into roles and events they weren’t comfortable with.

“Great, great team effort. From field events to events on the track, we have a solid group of seniors this year and they really stepped up and filled some holes and ran some races and events they normally don’t participate in and did really well in them and all for just going after that team victory,” she said. “It was really a valiant effort from all of the kids on the team and I’m super proud of all of them.”

As the team heads into the final stretch of their season, Marie Sample said they’re looking to get as many kids as they can to the state meet and are excited to see what they can do.

“Now that we’re getting some meets going, our four throwers haven’t been really able to throw except for the last two and a half to three weeks. For our field event people, they’re starting to get some practice and our pole vaulters are going over heights they really haven’t been able to do. As far as trackwise, going into sections, we’ve got a nice group of sprinters and a nice group of distance kids and we’re going to try and get as many events out to state,” she said. “There’s a few relays that we’re looking at and see if we can get as many kids to state as we can. They’re excited about it; I think this could be our biggest group that we’ve taken in a long time. A lot of older kids that want to get it done and some good younger kids who are coming in and want to help the older kids get there, so it’ll be exciting to see as we get going the last couple of weeks.”
