PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Wabasso splits pair of games with Sleepy Eye

WABASSO – The Wabasso baseball team split a doubleheader against Sleepy Eye on Monday afternoon. The Rabbits fell in game one 5-3 but rebounded with a 3-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.

In the opener, Sleepy Eye got out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning before Wabasso got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run. The Rabbits would add another run in the bottom of the fifth, but Sleepy Eye answered right back in the next inning with a run of its own to take a 5-2 lead. Wabasso got one run across in bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get any more and fell by two runs.

Jacob Plaetz led the way for Wabasso with a 3 for 4 day at the plate with two RBI while Cooper Taylor went 2 for 3 with a walk. Plaetz took the loss on the mound, going 4.2 innings while allowing four runs on four hits and striking out four.

In the nightcap, the Rabbits were able to jump out to an early lead with a run in the first inning before adding two more in the second. Sleepy Eye cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Wabasso held on to earn the 3-2 victory.

Tony Franta led the way for the Rabbits with a 2 for 3 day at the plate with a run scored while Plaetz went 1 for 2 with an RBI and Kyle Jacobson added a hit as well.

Jacobson earned the victory on the hill, going all five innings while allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven.

Wabasso (2-1) will face New Ulm Cathedral in a doubleheader on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Canby 10,

Minneota 6

MINNEOTA – The Minneota baseball team fell to Canby 10-6 on Monday afternoon.

The Vikings got things started in the top of the second with a pair of runs to take a quick 2-0 lead, but the Lancers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Canby continued to find scoring in the next inning, scoring three times in the third to push its lead to 6-2. Minneota would get two runs to cut the score to 6-4 in the fourth, but Canby answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-4. The Vikings got two more runs in the top of the fifth to once again make it a two-run game, but the Lancers had another answer with two final runs in the bottom half to bring it to the 10-6 final.

Brant Buysse led the way for the Vikings with a 3 for 4 day at the plate with three runs scored while Jacob Hennen went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Jaymes Moon went 1 for 1 with two RBI as well.

Teddy Pesch took the loss for Minneota on the hill, going 2.1 innings while allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out one. Alex Pohlen and Jacob Hennen came on in relief for the Vikings to toss the final 3.2 innings.

Kalib Greenman led the way for the Lancers with a 3 for 4 day at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI while Nolan Harding added a hit and two RBI and Hunter Cleveland went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Evan Stoks earned the victory on the hill for Canby, going four innings while allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out three. Chantz Engesmoe came on in relief to pitch the final three innings.

Canby (2-3) will face RTR on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while Minneota (3-1) will face Renville County West on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

SLEEPY EYE – The Wabasso softball team fell to Sleepy Eye in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Rabbits dropped game one 15-3 in five innings before falling in the nightcap 4-2.

In the opener, Cora Eichten led the way for Wabasso with a 1 for 1 day at the plate with a walk and two RBI while Emily Benz, Sarah Franta, Jenna Frank and Megan Rothmeier each had a hit. Emily Benz took the loss in the circle, allowing seven earned runs.

In the nightcap, Frank led the way for the Rabbits with a 2 for 3 day at the plate while Eichten, Franta, Rothmeier and Allison Fenger each added a hit. Emily Benz took the loss in the circle.

Wabasso will face New Ulm Cathedral in a doubleheader on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

GOLF

Appleton/Dawson Invite

APPLETON/DAWSON – A couple of area golf teams competed on Monday afternoon at Appleton and Dawson. In Appleton, the Dawson-Boyd girls team recorded an incomplete team score while Yellow Medicine East finished second with a score of 291. Lac qui Parle Valley took first on the girls side with a team score of 177 while MACCRAY, Central Minnesota Christian and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg recorded incomplete team scores as well.

For Dawson-Boyd, Ella Mork led the way with a 49 while Elly Stratmoen shot 53 and Rachel Lund had 55. Abby Jaenisch led the way for YME with a 67 while Madison Ohliger shot 71, Sam Anderson had 73 and Anna Viergutz shot 80 to round out the scores for the Sting.

On the boys side, Dawson-Boyd recorded an incomplete team score while YME shot 208 to finish fourth. Community Christian School of Willmar took first with a team score of 170 while LQPV took second with a 178 and MACCRAY came in third with a 189.

Tyler Lund led the way for Dawson-Boyd with a 38 while Seth Stratmoen shot 52. For YME, Jacob Peterson led the way with a 46 while Sam Ohliger shot 48 and Ben Rillo had 56. Tyson Knollenberg shot 58 while Brett Harr had 61 and Ty Anderson had 63 to round out the scores for the Sting.

In Dawson, the Dawson-Boyd girls team recorded an incomplete team score while YME finished second with a team score of 267. LQPV took first on the girls side with a team score of 170.

Rachel Lund and Mork led the way for Dawson-Boyd with 52s while Elly Stratmoen shot 54. Madison Ohliger shot 54 to lead the way for YME while Jaenisch shot 62, Sam Anderson had 70 and Viergutz had 81 to round out the scores for the Sting.

On the boys side, Dawson-Boyd recorded an incomplete team score while YME shot 187 to finish third. LQPV and CCS tied for first with team scores of 165.

Tyler Lund led the way for Dawson-Boyd with a 43 while Collin Swedzinski shot 46 and Seth Stratmoen had 49. For YME, Peterson led the way with a 42 while Sam Ohliger shot 44 and Rillo shot 45. Knollenberg had 56 while Harr shot 64 and Ty Anderson had 73 to round out the scores for the Sting.
