MARSHALL – The Marshall wrestling team had a historic season this past winter. The Tigers posted an overall record of 20-3, finishing runner-up in the Section 3AA team tournament but had multiple wrestlers compete at the Class AA individual state tournament.

Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said he was pleased with the overall performance from his team throughout the season and felt they were able to exceed everyone’s expectations.

“As a whole, the season went really well,” Bouwman said. “We had a lot of kids step up and accomplish a lot of goals they had set. We met our expectations and exceeded other teams thoughts of us. We could always accomplish what we did and push them to where they needed to go.”

Multiple wrestlers led the way for the Tigers this season. Jackson Hughes, Zach Stahl, Wyatt Martin, Hsa Khee Lar, Hsa La Eh and Grant Louwagie all posted 30-plus win seasons.

Bouwman said the team grew a lot this season in the aspect of supporting each other and picking each other up after a loss.

The kids really bought into the system and were there for each other. It’s funny how wrestling can be an individual sport just as much as a team sport,” Bouwman said. “We had duals where we had kids who were expected to win but got beat, but they picked each other up and had a “I’m here for you, but here for myself” mentality.”

With the Tigers returning its core group back next season, Bouwman said it was great for his team to be able to gain the experience they did and looks forward to making another run.

“We only graduate one wrestler, so we pretty much get everyone back but Wyatt. We’ll get Spencer Wambeke back from a knee injury so that’ll be nice,” Bouwman said. “We’re still a young team but we had a lot of people step up and gain experience, so it’ll be exciting to see them go into the spotlight next season.”
