MARSHALL – After taking down New London-Spicer to kick off the Section 3AA team tournament on Thursday, the Marshall wrestling team continued its postseason play with a matchup against Worthington on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers were able to advance to the section championship meet with a 43-16 victory over the Trojans, where Marshall would square off with the No.1 South seed Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls. The Tigers gave a spirited effort, but ultimately fell to the Red Bulls 49-20 in the championship match.

Against Worthington, the Tigers dropped the first match before getting decision wins from Conner Roth, Hsa La Eh and Lucas Hodges and a pin from Hsa Khee Lar to give Marshall a 15-6 lead in the meet.

After the Trojans cut it to 15-9 with a decision win in the 138-weight class, Marshall picked up another pair of wins from Grant Louwagie and Jackson Hughes to push the Tigers lead to 24-9.

Marshall then earned victories from Zach Stahl, Wyatt Martin, Jaiden Bahr and Zack Felcyn down the stretch to take the 43-16 win and move on to the championship match against Fairmont/MCW.

The Tigers then faced off against Fairmont/MCW, who Marshall competed against just a couple of weeks ago. The Redbulls controlled the tempo right away, as they won the first nine matches to take a 43-0 lead. Marshall got on the scoreboard when Zach Stahl earned a technical fall victory before Wyatt Martin and Jaiden Bahr each picked up a pin while Zack Felcyn won by decision to close out the meet.

Marshall coach Justin Bouwman said he was pleased with the team’s effort in both matches but credited Worthington and Fairmont/MCW on the performances they had.

“These past two meets I give all the credit to the kids; they worked as hard as they could and put it all out there. We tried some different things and it worked out for us in the first one against Worthington. They’re a really good group and we were lucky to get out of there and then Fairmont just also has a really great group of kids,” Bouwman said. “We were hoping some things would go our way and we just didn’t get those things. They’re a good team and they’re going to represent our section well up there.”

Bouwman said their ability to adjust with the roster and have the players be flexible with where they were wrestling.

“I think it was our flexibility and being to insert and move guys around,” Bouwman said. “The ability to do that helped us out a ton with just getting some better matchups and it worked out really well for us.”

Marshall will now compete in the individual section tournament this weekend in Dawson. Bouwman said their biggest takeaway will be to continue to wrestle at the pace they’re going and take advantage of the seedings that they’ve earned.

“We’ve wrestled really well and we just need to keep that rolling and keep it going and we’ll be sitting really good,” Bouwman said. “We got some key wins for some seeds, so it’s exciting.
