SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: SMSU completes strong performance in Wisconsin

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s and men’s indoor track & field teams put together a strong performance on Saturday at the six-team University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcon Winter Classic.

Rebecca Manteuffel and Angela Prokosch finished 1-2 in the weight throw with Manteuffel recording a school record toss of 16.61m, while Prokosch’s throw of 16.24m ranks second in school history.

In the 800 meters, Kayla Jansky recorded a first place time at 2:30.22, while teammates Emily Gillingham finished in second place at 2:33.25 and Hannah Palmeter crossed in fourth place at 2:38.69.

Kim Shabino won the 200 meter dash crossing the line at 26.27, while Lauryn Ballard was third at 27.63. Shabino also won the 55 meter dash with a program record-setting time of 7.46, breaking her previous record of 7.54 in 2015.

SMSU’s 4×400 relay team of Shabino, Meghan Sullivan, Abby Schotter and Jansky took home first place with a time of 4:25.47.

For the SMSU men’s team, Bashir Aidrus earned a pair of first place finishes, including a school record time in the mile. Aidrus set the new mark with a time of 4:26.81, breaking the previous record of 4:28.74 he set last season. Aidrus also rallied to win the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.74.

Chase Hamilton led the way for the Mustangs in the 3,000 meters with a first place time of 9:16.52, with Ben Broze placing second at 9:41.90 and Clayton Hartle crossing in third place at 9:50.45.

Zach Jones also had a big day capturing first place in the 400 meters with a time of 52.89, while Carl Anderson finished second in the 55 meter dash (6.68) and fourth in the 200 meter dash (23.84).

Josh Behning finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 14.97, while Ashanti Payne placed third at 14.69m and Connor Wigand was fifth at 13.30m.

In the shot put, Wigand finished second at 14.39m, while Behning was third at 13.07m.

Saturday’s action capped a busy two days for several Mustangs who also competed at the University of Northern Iowa Jack Jennett Invite on Friday.

Manteuffel finished in fourth place in the weight throw at 15.65m and placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 11.67m.

Behning recorded a 10th place finish in the shot put at 13.62m and was 11th in the weight throw at 14.14m. Payne earned 12th place in the weight throw with a mark of 14.09m, while Wigand was and was 14th in the shot put (13.18m) and 14th in the weight throw (12.84m).

Southwest Minnesota State continues competition next Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Minnesota State Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato.
