PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Turnovers costly for Marshall in 68-60 loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln

MARSHALL – It’s always going to an uphill climb for a team if they commit a lot of turnovers. That’s exactly the battle the Marshall Tigers faced when they took on Sioux Falls Lincoln on Saturday. The Tigers committed 19 turnovers against the Patriots and those turnovers proved to be too much to overcome, as the Patriots defeated the Tigers 68-60.

“We need to improve on valuing the basketball,” Marshall coach Travis Carroll said. “We have a lot of work to do with taking care of the basketball. We had a lot of turnovers today. It’s hard to score points when we are turning over the basketball. Sioux Falls Lincoln was getting uncontested layups off our turnovers. We lost by eight points and we gave up more than eight points off our turnovers. That’s something that we need to clean up if we are going to compete against a team like Sioux Falls Lincoln.”

The Patriots opened the scoring by knocking down a 3-pointer. Trey Lance quickly responded by getting the Tigers on the board the next time down the court. The Patriots responded with another 3-pointer to make it a 6-2 game.

Following the second 3-pointer from the Patriots, the Tigers went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at eight. The Patriots answered back with a run of their own. Following a Nick Klaith basket to tie the game at 8-8, the Patriots went on an 11-2 run to open up a 21-10 lead.

“They have a good combination of athleticism to get to the rim and the ability to shoot the ball from beyond the 3-point line,” Carroll said. “That’s very hard to defend. They are very athletic inside and they rebound well. They have a very good basketball team. They caused us some problems throughout the game.”

With the Tigers trailing 30-18, Jake Hess knocked down a corner 3-pointer to pull Marshall within nine before a Bryce Paulsen 3-pointer made it a 32-24 game. With the Tigers trailing 35-26 with under a minute to play in the first half Lance hit a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to make it a six-point game at halftime.

“We had a good stretch of taking care of the ball,” Carroll said. “We hit a big shot right before the half. We could have easily been down 10-15 points at halftime. We hit a three and get within six. We come out and get the first basket of the second half and it’s a four point game. The end of the first half and the beginning of the second half was very important for us to get an opportunity to win the basketball game. It very easily could have gone the other way.”

Hess opened the scoring in the second half to make it a 35-31 game. Sioux Falls Lincoln answered by scoring the next two baskets to push their lead to 39-31.

A Trey Steinbach 3-pointer made it a 39-37 game before a pair of Hess free throws tied the game at 39-39. Brock Pruszynski bucket gave Marshall their first lead at 41-39 and capped off a 10-0 Tiger run.

“It was good to see our kids make some defensive stops in the second half,” Carroll said. “We were able to get back in the game, but we just didn’t have enough to get the job done today. Our kids did a great job of playing with effort in the second half and getting a lead. Obviously that’s hard to sustain when we were playing from behind like we were today. We made that nice run in the second half, then we started to commit turnovers at the end of the game. Turnovers were key in today’s game. They scored a lot of points off our turnovers. It’s hard to win games like that.”

Once the Tigers got the lead the Patriots went on a 9-1 run to take a 48-42 lead. A Trey Lance layup tied the game at 50-50. Following the Lance basket the Patriots went on a 7-0 run to make it a 57-50 game. That deficit was too much to overcome late, as the Tigers fell 68-60.

Lance finished the game with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. Hess chipped in with nine points. Matt Onken scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds.

With the loss the Tigers are now 7-2. They are 7-0 against the state of Minnesota and 0-2 against the city of Sioux Falls. They’ll be back in action today against Luverne.
