SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU guard Bruggeman named NSIC South Player of the Week

BURNSVILLE – Southwest Minnesota State University junior guard Ryan Bruggeman was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division Player of the Week today following a pair of Mustang home victories this past weekend.

Bruggeman, a 6-foot, 177-pound native Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, averaged 24 points on 54 percent shooting, 7.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds in home victories over Upper Iowa (93-86) and Winona State (79-76).

It’s the second NSIC South Player of the Week honor for Bruggeman in his career.

Bruggeman scored a game-high 24 points on 8 of 15 shooting with three 3-pointers and nine assists versus UIU on Friday night. He also grabbed five rebounds and made 5 of 6 free throws.

On Saturday night, he scored a game-high 24 points with six assists and two rebounds versus WSU. He made 7 of 13 field goals, including 1 of 1 from 3-point range and was a perfect 9 of 9 from the foul line.

Bruggeman leads SMSU in scoring (18.2), assists (45) and steals (18) this season, while shooting 46 percent (52 of 112) from the field and 85 percent (52 of 61) from the free throw line. He has scored in double figures in all nine games and has scored 20 or more points four times.

Bruggeman has started all 71 games in his career and has scored 987 points and has dished out 337 assists.

Bruggeman is a 2014 graduate of Pelican Rapids High School.

Southwest Minnesota State (6-3 NSIC, 2-1 NSIC) resumes play on Friday night at Minnesota Duluth starting at 8 p.m. SMSU closes the weekend on Saturday playing at St. Cloud State with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
