ADRIAN – The matchup between the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights and the Adrian Dragons on Saturday proved to be no contest. The Knights jumped out to a 24-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game and never looked back en route to a 91-34 season opening victory.

“The key was rebounding,” RTR coach Ted Kern said. “They were getting well defended shots and we did a nice job of preventing second shots. Once we got things going offensively we were able to amp up the pressure defensively. It opened up quickly.”

RTR opened the game by scoring the first five points, before Adrian got on the board. Following the two points from the Dragons the Knights went on a 19-0 run to open up a 24-2 lead.

“Communication was real key,” RTR’s Garrett Kern said. “We were playing the passing lanes really well. We got out and ran when we had to and got easy buckets.”

RTR senior post player Westin Kirk led the Knights with nine rebonds. Kirk did a great job of boxing out to limit the Dragons to one shot.

“We were communicating well,” Kirk said. “We were boxing out aggressively and just going up and getting the ball.”

At the half the Knights held a commanding 60-23 lead. In the second half the Knights held the Dragons to just 11 points.

It’s not very often that a team scores 91 points during their season opener. The Knights looked like a well oiled machine on both ends of the floor. Kern said that they were able to do what they wanted to do offensively and turned defense into offense.

“We shared the ball very well,” coach Kern said. “We got out and ran like we want to do. We found that next pass. You never know what things are going to look like the first time out. We did a nice job of doing what we want to do offensively.”

Kern led the way for the Knights with 23 points. Kirk scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Kern said that Kirk’s play inside opened things up for him beyond the arc.

“We were moving the ball real well,” coach Kern said. “We worked real well together as a team. We got the big man involved and that helped open up the outside.”

The Hansen twins combined for 28 points. Carter Hansen did a bit of everything. He scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds, recorded six steals and dished out six assists. Cooper Hansen finished with 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and recorded three steals.

RTR will play their home opener on Friday against the Canby Lancers.

“We want do a better job of passing,” Garrett Kern said. “We want to get the big man involved a little more.”
