SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU announces newest signing

MARSHALL – Southwest Minnesota State University head men’s basketball coach Brad Bigler announced on Thursday the signing of Jacob Phipps from Anoka, Minnesota, to a letter of intent to continue his academic and basketball career at SMSU.

Phipps, a 6-foot-9 center, is a senior at Anoka High School, where he is a four-year letter winner.

“Jake’s length and athleticism showcase his shot blocking ability,” Bigler said. “When he came to our elite camp this summer he finished great around the rim within the offense. We can’t wait to get Jake here and start working with him. Jake will remind Mustang fans of a young Jeremy VanKlompenburg.”

Phipps is a team captain for Anoka, where he earned all-conference accolades last season averaging 10.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 2.6 assists per game.

Southwest Minnesota State is 1-2 on the season and resumes play Friday night with a match-up versus Michigan Tech in Moorhead, Minnesota. SMSU concludes the weekend on Saturday afternoon with a contest versus Northern Michigan.
