PREP ATHLETICS: Canby’s Norah King signs to throw for SMSU track and field

CANBY – Norah King has only been a Canby Lancer for two years. In that two years she’s developed strong bonds with her classmates and teammates on the track and basketball team at Canby.

Last week her support system within the Canby community watched her sign her letter of intent to throw for the Southwest Minnesota State University track and field team. King was overjoyed with excitement knowing that she will be competing at the collegiate level, but noted that she’d miss the competing for the Lancers next year.

“I’ll miss all the teammates and connections I’ve made here,” King said. “I’ve only been here two years, but I’ve made a lot of connections. I’ll miss them.”

King grew up in a sports household. Growing up in that environment King couldn’t help but fall in love with the thrill of competition.

“It means a lot,” King said. “I grew up in a home that loves sports and competition. To be able to continue playing beyond high school is a great feeling.”

The campus of SMSU is just over 30 miles away from the city of Canby. King said that location and the environment on campus played a role in her decision to commit to SMSU.

“I really like the coaches,” King said. “The campus gave me a home feeling. It just felt like a right fit.”

During her time as a Mustang, King hopes to compete in as many throwing events as she can.

“I hope to compete in discuss and shot put,” King said. “Maybe some other throwing events that are available in college.”

Throwing lets King display her strength. That’s the number one thing King loves about competing in throwing events.

“Throwing lets me show how strong I am,” King said. “To be able to show my strength is pretty cool. I just like seeing how far I can throw it.”

King will be a member of the Lancers basketball team this winter and will then turn her attention to closing out her track and field career as a Lancer. King would like to qualify for the state tournament and break a school record during her final season as a Lancer.

“I would like to beat the school record in shot put,” King said. “For discuss I’d like to throw 130 feet.”
