SMSU VOLLEYBALL: SMSU volleyball drops to second in the latest AVCA Top-25 polls

LEXINGTON, Ky.- Southwest Minnesota State’s four-week reign as the nation’s top ranked volleyball team came to an end as the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association announced on Monday that SMSU is now the No. 2 team in Division II according to this week’s AVCA Top-25 poll.

SMSU (16-1) suffered its first loss of the season and first conference loss at No. 9 Northern State, which moved into the top-10 for the first time this season following its 3-1 win over SMSU, on Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs, who had the second longest win streak in school history of 16-consecutive wins snapped at NSU, still garnered 14 first place votes and 1,123 total adjust points giving them the No. 2 ranking this week. SMSU, the nation’s second ranked team in the first two polls of the season, are one of three Northern Sun teams in this week’s top-five and are one of four schools in this week’s top-10.

Concordia-St. Paul, which also suffered its first conference loss of the season this past weekend, drops to No. 3 in this week’s poll. The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, who defeated CSP this past Saturday, moved up one spot to No. 5 while also garnering one first place vote in this week’s poll.

Despite all the shuffling in the top-ten this week, Winona State (14) and Wayne State (21) maintain the same spot in this week’s top-25 while No. 18 Augustana moves down one spot from last week.

Joining the seven NSIC schools to make this week’s AVCA Top-25, Upper Iowa and Sioux Falls made it nine total schools from the Northern Sun to receive votes in this week’s poll.

The Mustangs have now been ranked in the Top 25 for 154 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006, and have made it into the Top 10 for 58 consecutive polls.

SMSU will look to get back to its winning ways this weekend as they host Minot State on Friday night at 6 p.m., and U-Mary on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
