SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: Mustangs ranked No. 14 in D2 Bulletin Preseason Top 25

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Southwest Minnesota State University men’s basketball team, which won 28 games last season and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Central Region Tournament, is ranked 14th in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25 poll.

SMSU head coach Brad Bigler, the 2016-17 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year, has seven letter winners and five starters returning from last season’s team that finished 28-6 overall. SMSU, which tied a school record with 28 victories, won the NSIC South Division title for the first time in team history and captured the NSIC tournament championship for the second time in program history. SMSU won a pair of games in the NCAA tournament before losing to eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State.

Northwest Missouri State topped the poll, followed by Quincy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Shippensburg and Chico State.

Arkansas Monticello is the only other team from the Central Region ranked in the Top 25.

SMSU will open its season on Nov. 3 hosting St. Olaf College in its lone exhibition game of the season. The Mustangs begin the regular season on Nov. 10-11 in Emporia, Kansas, facing Fort Hays State (Kan.) and Emporia State (Kan.).

SMSU will open its 13-game home schedule with a non-conference game on Nov. 15 versus Northern State. The NSIC opener is set for Nov. 25 at the University of Sioux Falls while SMSU’s conference home opener is Dec. 1 versus Upper Iowa.
