MARSHALL – The second ranked Marshall Tigers made quick work of the visiting Pipestone Area Arrows Tuesday evening. The Tigers picked up their sixth straight win to improve to 14-4 with a sweep of the visiting Arrows. With the sweep the Tigers have now won 14 straight sets, with their last set loss coming on Sept. 23, against Bethlehem Academy.

The Arrows led in the opening set, 6-4 before the Tigers settled in. The Tigers went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. Once the Tigers got the lead they never looked back en route to a 25-18 opening set victory.

“We had a little bit of a lull in set one,” Marshall coach Dan Westby said. “After that I thought we played pretty clean. We had good effort. We’ve got a home stretch here. We thought it was important to get this one. It was another Big South Conference win. The team we played tonight gets after it defensively. That’s a big win for us.”

Whitney Schwartz and Paige Andries both had two blocks for the Tigers in the opening set.

“Both Whitney and have done a nice job, especially the past couple of weeks at the net, in terms of their blocking,” Westby said. “We need that. That needs to continue with those two.”

Logan Sherman led the Tigers with four kills in the first set. Jordyn Hilgemann chipped in with two kills.

Rachel Schwarz recorded two aces for the Tigers in the set. Westby said that the team did a good job of serving aggressively.

“I thought we served good to location,” Westby said. “I thought we also were pretty aggressive. That was good to see tonight.”

The second set started off as a back and forth affair with neither team able to create much separation. With the Tigers holding an 11-9 lead they went on a a 14-3 run to pick up a 25-12 victory.

Erica Jones led the Tigers with six kills in the set. Andries finished with four kills. Hilgemann chipped in with three kills. Mia Schnaible recorded one ace.

The beginning of the third set was much like the beginning of the second set. The two teams traded points early on, before the Tigers went on a 14-5 run to open up a commanding 22-13 lead. The Tigers went onto win the set, 25-15 to pick up the sweep.

Jones and Kaylee Gossen both recorded four kills to lead the Tigers. Jones also recorded one ace. Sherman finished with three kills. Hilgemann finished with two kills. Maddy Marks chipped in with one ace from the service line.

The Tigers will be at home again on Thursday to take on Windom Area. The Eagles are 15-5 and have won four straight. The Eagles won their last match against Martin County West, 3-0.

“I thought there was a couple times we weren’t in the right position defensively,” Westby said. “We need to work on that. We need to be where were supposed to be.”
