PREP FOOTBALL: Area teams turn towards the postseason next week

MARSHALL – The area football teams wrapped up the regular season Wednesday night and now they turn their attention to the postseason.

Section 2AAAA

The Marshall Tigers earned the No. 1 seed in the 2AAAA tournament. They’ll play the winner of the Dassel-Cokato and Mankato East matchup.

The Tigers finished the season with an 8-0 record. Dassel-Cokato finished the season with a 4-4 record. Mankato East finished the season with a 3-5 record.

Jefferson Lee V led the way for the Tigers with 24 rushing touchdowns. Lee’s 24 rushing touchdowns was the second most in the state. Lee rushed for 1,166 rushing yards and averaged 10.8 yards per carry.

Trey Lance passed for 1,139 yards and 13 touchdowns. Lance added 353 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Section 3AA

The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers earned the No. 3 seed and will play St. James in the opening round. The Panthers finished the season with a 4-4 record and enter tournament play on a three-game losing streak.

St. James finished the regular season with an 0-8 record.

Section 3A

The Wabasso Rabbits earned the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season with an 8-0 record. The Rabbits will begin their quest for a second straight state tournament bid on Oct. 24, at home against Minnesota Valley Lutheran. MN Valley Lutheran finished the season with an 0-8 record.

The Murray County Central Rebels earned the No. 3 seed and will host the Adrian Dragons in the opening round. It will be a rematch of last year’s section championship game.

The Rebels finished the season with an even 4-4 record. The Dragons finished the season 1-7, with their lone victory coming in Slayton against the Rebels.

Section 5A

The Minneota Vikings finished the regular season with an 8-0 record and earned the No. 2 seed in the 5A section tournament. They’ll host Yellow Medicine East in the opening round. YME finished the regular season with a 1-7 record. YME lost to Minneota in Minneota earlier this year, 39-0.

The Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks finished the season with a 7-1 record and earned the No. 3 seed. Dawson-Boyd’s lone loss came on the road against the Minneota Vikings.

The Blackjacks will host Ortonville in the opening round. Dawson-Boyd wrapped up the regular season with a 49-24 victory against the Trojans.

The Canby Lancers ended the season with a 4-4 record and will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament. They’ll hit the road in the opening round to take on Lac qui Parle Valley.

The Lancers lost to LQPV earlier this season, 27-6. The Eagles finished the season with a 4-4 record.

A year ago the Lakeview Lakers were a state tournament team. This year the Lakers took a step back and finished with an 0-8 record. They’ll open up the section tournament on the road against the No. 1 seed, BOLD.

Section 2A 9-Man

The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights finished their first year at the 9-Man level with a 6-2 record. They earned the No. 2 seed and will host MACCRAY in the opening round. The Knights enter tournament play on a four-game winning streak. It will be the first time that the Knights hosted a home playoff game since 2005.

The Knights defeated MACCRAY earlier this year, 22-0. The Wolverines finished the season with a 2-6 record.

Section 3A 9-Man

The Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers wrapped up the regular season with a 5-3 record. They earned the No. 3 seed in the 3A tournament and will host Madelia in the opening round.

Madelia finished the season with a 3-5 record and enter tournament play on two-game winning streak.
